Somatic Experiencing® (SE) – A Body-Centered Approach to Healing Trauma

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a gentle, body-oriented approach to healing trauma and chronic stress. Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, SE is the result of decades of research into the physiology of trauma and the nervous system’s role in healing.

Trauma can stem from a single overwhelming event — such as an accident, medical emergency, or assault — or build gradually over time through prolonged stress, neglect, or emotional pain. Regardless of the source, trauma often leaves the body in a state of dysregulation, impairing one’s ability to feel calm, safe, and connected.

SE works by helping individuals complete interrupted self-protective responses and release survival energy stored in the body. Rather than focusing solely on the story or memory of a traumatic event, SE guides clients to gently tune into physical sensations, helping the nervous system find balance and resilience at a pace that feels safe.

This process supports:

  • Restoration of physiological regulation

  • Greater emotional and physical resilience

  • Reduction in trauma-related symptoms

  • A deeper sense of connection between body and mind

Common sources of trauma addressed through SE include:

  • Car accidents and falls

  • Invasive medical procedures

  • Sexual or physical assault

  • Emotional abuse or neglect

  • Birth trauma (for parent or child)

  • War or natural disasters

  • Chronic stress or fear

  • Grief and loss

Through supportive, mindful body awareness, Somatic Experiencing helps the body release trauma safely and gently — restoring a sense of wholeness, safety, and empowerment.
